Description – Local anesthetic agent. Proparacaine is a meta-aminobenzoic acid derivative which permeates up to the sensitive nerve terminals of corneal tissue. It is a rapid acting and short-during local anesthetic agent, when blocking the generation and conduction of nerve impulses by reducing the nerve cell membrane permeability to sodium ion. This stabilizes the membrane and inhibits its depolarization reversibly, avoiding the development of the propagated action potential and blocking the subsequent conduction.
